President Karzai participated in the tripartite summit of Farsi speaking countries – Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan - held in Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe on July 26, 2006.

During the summit, President Karzai, President Rakhmanov of Tajikistan, and President Ahmadinejad of Iran exchanged viewpoints on energy, transportation, political and economic issues, and the campaign against narcotics and terrorism.  Five cooperation agreements were signed in the areas of economics, transportation, counter-narcotics, and counterterrorism.

They also expressed concern over the fighting in Lebanon and hoped that the crisis will be resolved diplomatically.

The leaders agreed to establish a tripartite commission that will improve their cultural and regional ties.  It was decided that the first session of this commission will be held in Kabul in two months.

In a joint press conference following the summit, the three heads of states called their talks "effective in bolstering relations."
