On September 26, President Karzai met with Henry Paulson, the US Secretary of the Treasury, in Washington DC.
Both sides discussed the prospect of waiving loans the US made to Afghanistan before the Communist takeover in 1978, ways to increase Afghanistan’s GDP, the effectiveness of customs levies, and the curbing of corruption.
The President also met separately with Condoleezza Rice, US Secretary of State; Chuck Hagel, US Senator; and Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader, in Washington DC.
The expansion of bilateral relations between Afghanistan and the US and the removal of obstacles to the country’s reconstruction were among the topics discussed.
