In a meeting with President Karzai on Tuesday in the Palace in Kabul, a delegation of US members of Congress led by John F. Tierney of the Democratic Party representing State of Massachusetts lauded the achievements by Afghanistan over the past few years and urged on continued commitment of the United States to the people of Afghanistan.
Issues of discussion in the meeting included fighting against terrorism, counter narcotics and US involvement in rebuilding Afghanistan.
Congressman John Tierney, who is also a member in the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, said that Afghanistan enjoys a strong support among both the Democrats and Republicans.
President Karzai stated that fighting terrorism, beefing up state institutions and national army and police and building capacity within state administration are the top challenges Afghanistan is facing.
The President insisted that an equipped and well-trained Afghan army will be able to shoulder more counterterrorism burden off the international community.
The President thanked the people of the United States for their contribution in security and reconstruction of Afghanistan.
Also in the delegation were Representative Betty McCollum, Representative Jim Moran, Representative Maurice Hinchey and Representative Barbara Cubin.
