President Karzai Discusses Next Elections with Elders and Influentials

President Hamid Karzai on Sunday chaired a consultative meeting that focused on the forthcoming elections in Afghanistan.

The next elections for president, national assembly, provincial councils and district councils in Afghanistan are scheduled for late 2009.

The participants that included both the vice-presidents, former President Burhanuddin Rabani, House Speaker Younus Qanoni, Chief Justice Abdul Salam Azimi, Professor Sayaf, Pir Gelani, Ayatullah Mohsini, Mohammad Mohaqeq, Deputy Senate Speaker Hamid Gelani, Senior Minister Amin Arsala, Haj Minister Shahrani and Justice Minister Danish exchanged views on different aspects of the next elections including security, logistics, funding and people participation in all the four elections.

Other main issue of discussion was whether the four elections be held jointly or separately, for which it was collectively agreed that a more detailed discussion be held in a greater meeting later.

Corruption was another issue discussed as a major challenge that has deeply concerned both the Afghan public and the international community. The meeting urged on the need for a comprehensive and serious fight against the scourge.
