On September 23, President Karzai met with Jack Layton, leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, in Montreal.
In the meeting, Mr. Layton discussed the effectiveness of Canada’s assistance to Afghanistan and described his party’s position on the issue. The New Democratic Party opposes the presence of Canadian troops in Afghanistan.
He stressed that besides fighting terrorism, efforts should also be made to develop Afghanistan economically. In addition, both sides discussed the challenges narcotics pose to Afghanistan and ways to effectively fight it.
President Karzai explained the need for continuing Canada’s assistance to security and reconstruction in Afghanistan and said, “Canada, alongside other members of the international community, has provided significant assistance to Afghanistan and we welcome more.”
