On November 21, President Hamid Karzai received the head and members of Afghanistan’s Ulema Council at the Presidential Palace.
In the meeting, Councilmember Abdul Hussein Haidari read out the resolution of Afghanistan’s Ulema Council. The resolution reads:
1. The Council supports the Jirgas of tribal elders from both sides of the Durrand Line and emphasizes that the representatives attending the Jirgas should consider the national interests of their country in order to create peace and stability in the region.
2. The Council calls the Government’s peace and reconciliation process a major positive step towards peace and prosperity, and expresses its strong support and preparedness to take any role in achieving the desired result.
3. Afghanistan’s Ulema Council wants the international forces stationed in Afghanistan to operate according to the law so that the loss of civilian lives will be avoided.
4. Afghanistan’s Ulema Council expresses its regret at the suicide attacks which kill innocent people and calls it an inhuman act against Islam; Islamic teachings are against such heinous acts and forbid them.
5. The council appreciates the efforts of Afghanistan’s Attorney General in the fight against corruption, and requests the sincere continuation of such efforts. It urges that the fight should be restricted to corruption only.
6. Afghanistan’s Ulema Council strongly condemns Israel’s attacks on Gaza and Bethlehem.
7. Afghanistan’s Ulema Council expresses its regret at the sectarian killings in Iraq and urges the Iraqi people to protect Islamic unity and not to resort to sectarian violence.
President Hamid Karzai appreciated the Ulema Council’s resolution, saying, “Afghanistan’s Ulema Council has always presented its comments on major issues in Afghanistan in accordance with the national interests of the country, which is clearly reflected in the resolution.”
