On November 22, President Hamid Karzai received General John Abizaid, Commander of the United States Central Command, at the Presidential Palace.
The situation in Afghanistan, the fight against terrorism, and the hastening of training and equipping for the national police and army were discussed in detail.
President Hamid Karzai called the strengthening of Afghanistan’s security institutions “crucial to ensuring security”. He emphasized the need for continuing the international community’s assistance to the people of Afghanistan, particularly that of the United States.
President Hamid Karzai said, “To effectively fight terrorism we must focus attention on its initial sources, and try to implement development projects besides military operations.”
He also shed light on the groundwork being laid for the regional security Jirgas of tribal elders on both sides of the Durrand Line.
General Abizaid assured President Karzai that his country will continue assisting Afghanistan until it can stand on its own feet.
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Zarrar Ahmad Muqbel, Minister of Interior, and Dr. Zalmai Rasoul, National Security Advisor.
