President Karzai Discusses Electoral System with Chief Elections Commissioner of India

In a meeting with President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday in the Palace in Kabul, India’s Chief Elections Commissioner N. Gopalaswami described to the President the electoral systems and methods practiced in India.

In the meeting also attended by Azizullah Ludin, Afghanistan’s Chief of Elections Commission (IEC), Mr. Gopalaswami highlighted the main activities and experiences of his commission.

President Karzai welcomed the technical exchange of expertise between the two countries’ electoral bodies and urged that Afghan commission can learn more on transparent and fair elections from India as the largest and vibrant democracy in the world.

President Karzai lauded the administration and electoral system of India as a success and termed it a good model for young democracies.

Also in presence to the meeting were Afghanistan’s Head and Deputy Head of Secretariat for the IEC and India’s Ambassador to Afghanistan.
