President Karzai Receives Foreign Minister of Germany
 
President Karzai during meeting with Foreign Minister of GermanyOn August 21, President Karzai received H.E. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Germany’s Foreign Minister, at the Gulkhana Palace.  The Minister emphasized his country’s continued assistance to Afghanistan’s reconstruction and to the reform of the Afghan National Police.

Minister Steinmeier called on the international community to pay greater attention to Afghanistan and said, “The people and government of Germany are standing next to the people of Afghanistan and will continue to assist Afghanistan as long as the assistance of the international community is needed.”

President Karzai added: “The people of Afghanistan will never forget the assistance of the people and the government of Germany.  Germany hosted the Bonn and Berlin conferences which played a key role in the creation of a stable and democratic Afghanistan.”

The President appreciated Germany’s assistance in equipping and training the police and said that police reform is an ongoing process that requires greater assistance to enhance its capacities.

Discussing terrorism, President Karzai emphasized that eradicating terrorism requires concentrating on its root causes and sources of funding.
