Prime Minister Tony Blair: “We Will be with Afghanistan in Every Challenge"

President Karzai and Prime Minister Tony Blair at a Joint Press Conference in Kabul On November 20, President Hamid Karzai and Tony Blair, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, held a joint press conference after meeting privately at the Presidential Palace.

Prime Minister Blair stated that “On behalf of the international community, I renew our commitment to Afghanistan.  We will be with the Afghan people in every challenge to security, reconstruction, and development.”

Blair clarified the reason why Britain, along with more than 30 other countries in the international coalition, is in Afghanistan: “We do not want this country to be a center for terrorists and a place of cruelty as it was under the Taliban.  We want Afghanistan to be a place where its people can live free and secure.”

“We have come to Afghanistan for a clear reason.  The problem of Afghanistan has become an international problem.  Therefore, we will remain committed and assist Afghanistan for as long as it is needed.  This commitment is not only for the sake of the Afghan people, but also for our own security,” he added.

President Hamid Karzai thanked Prime Minister Blair and the people of the UK for their assistance to Afghanistan, and called Blair a good friend who has always helped Afghanistan in its time of need.

In response to a question on Afghanistan’s demands from the international community, the President answered, “We appreciate the assistance of our friends and would like international donors to continue assisting Afghanistan’s reconstruction, especially in regard to strengthening the army, police, and justice system.”

President Hamid Karzai cited some of Afghanistan’s achievements over the last few years with help from the international community, including the return of 4.5 million refugees, an 82% increase in health services, and 28% economic growth.

In response to another question on cooperation with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, the President answered, “If Pakistan asked for our help in arresting Osama bin Laden and Mullah Omar, we would be ready to help because this is a joint fight against terrorism.”

Prior to his meeting with the President, Prime Minister Blair visited British soldiers based in the province of Helmand.
