President Karzai Attends UN General Assembly 
 
President Bush Addresses the UN General AssemblyOn September 19, the 61st session of the UN General Assembly was held in New York.

The session was attended by heads of states and representatives of 150 countries from around the world, including President Karzai.

Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations, briefed session participants on the UN annual report and the UN’s achievements in conflict resolution around the world.

The Brazilian president described poverty as a major problem in today’s world and called on the UN to pay more attention to reducing its impact on the one billion people who survive on less than US $1 per day.

President Bush described terrorism and extremism as the biggest challenges in today’s world and emphasized that nations can defeat this menace only if they unite in the fight against terror.

Speaking on Afghanistan, President Bush said, “This country was ruled by the brutal regime of the Taliban and Afghanistan’s chair at the UN was being disputed, but today this chair belongs to a democratically elected government and is represented by President Karzai.”

Directly addressing the Afghan people, President Bush added, “Together we toppled the Taliban regime that had brought miseries to you and provided sanctuaries to terrorist killers.  Since that time, you’ve appointed your leaders through free elections and formed a democratic government.  We respect your bravery and desire for a peaceful and free life and will support you in defending your achievements.”

The presidents of France, South Africa, and Pakistan also delivered speeches.

President Karzai is due to address the UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
