President Karzai Meets Lithuanian, Iranian Heads of State 
 
Presidents Karzai and AhmadinejadOn September 20, President Karzai met with the Lithuanian and Iranian heads of state on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In his meeting with Valdas Adamkus, President of Lithuania, the two presidents discussed Lithuania’s continuing assistance to Afghanistan’s security through its PRT based in the province of Ghor.

President Karzai thanked President Adamkus for Lithuania’s assistance and stressed the need to expand bilateral relations.

President Karzai also met with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and discussed strengthening bilateral relations between the two neighbors.

The two presidents called the execution of agreements between Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan reached earlier this year in Dushanbe as crucial to the expansion of cooperation.

President Karzai thanked President Ahmadinejad for Iran’s assistance to the reconstruction effort in Afghanistan, and invited him to visit Kabul in the near future.

President Karzai is due to leave New York for an official visit to Ottawa, Canada later this evening.
