On December 17, President Hamid Karzai received a number of Afghan women MPs at the Gul Khana Palace.
During the meeting, Shaima Khogiani, Shinkai Karokhil, Rahela Salim and Awa Alam Noorestani, on behalf of all women MPs, spoke and briefed the President on the challenges facing Afghan women.
They said, "Although, women's equal rights with men have been enshrined in Afghanistan’s constitution, but there is no guarantee for its implementation."
The MPs complained “Despite women’s participation in the executive and legislative branches, women are not properly represented in the judiciary.”
The President said “The Afghan people are happy with women’s participation in the country’s political life and strongly supports their presence in the executive and legislative branches. The Government will do utmost to ensure women’s rights. Women are working as governors and ambassadors.”
The Government will ensure that Afghan women will be given the opportunity to work in the judiciary and the Regional Peace and Prosperity Jirga Preparation Commission.
