President Karzai Meets with Afghan MediaOn August 16, President Karzai and Abdul Karim Khuram, Minister for Culture and Youth, met members of Afghanistan’s free press at the Presidential Palace to assess the conditions of media and culture in Afghanistan.

Among the issues discussed was the role of the free media in improving Afghanistan’s cultural, social, and security situation and a greater emphasis on Afghan culture to counter the effects of foreign media.

In addition, participants agreed to increase coverage of progress in the provinces as a result of development and reconstruction.  The issue of defending the rights of journalists and media members and providing for their safety was also emphasized.

The free media also requested that ministers must inform the people of Afghanistan of their works and projects on a quarterly basis.

President Karzai concluded by stating that the opinions and suggestions of Afghanistan’s free media were very important to today’s realities and promised that Minister Khuram and the Office of the President will follow up on their complaints and suggestions.
