President Karzai Meets Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister 
 
President Karzai and Italian Deputy Prime Minister Massimo D'AlemaOn November 11, President Karzai received Massimo D’Alema, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, at the Presidential Palace.

The fight against terrorism and extremism and the Jirga of tribal elders from both sides of the Durand Line were the topics discussed.

Prime Minister D’Alema reiterated Italy’s commitment to assisting the people of Afghanistan, saying, “Italy backs reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan and will continue to do so until Afghanistan stands on its own feet.”

President Karzai thanked Prime Minister D’Alema for the assistance of the people of Italy to the reconstruction of Afghanistan, especially for funding the construction of the Bamyan-Kabul Highway which serves as a lifeline for the people of central Afghanistan.

On the topic of terrorism, the President said, “To totally eradicate terrorism and extremism, we must concentrate our efforts on their roots and sources.”

The meeting was attended by Dr. Rangin Dadfar Spanta, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Dr. Zalmai Rasoul, National Security Advisor.
