President Hamid Karzai Donates Award Money to the Country’s Best Teachers
 

On January 06, Pesident Hamid Karzai has announced that he will donate the cash component of the Indira Ganhi peace prize that he was recently awarded to the welfare of the country’s school teachers.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Education has been asked to identify the best teachers in Afghanistan, both men and women.

The amount to be thus distributed is US$ 55,066.

President Hamid Karzai was honoured with the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2005. The award was conferred on him in New Delhi on November 19, the birth anniversary of the late Indian leader after whom the award is named.

President Hamid Karzai’s commitment to the cause of education of children is well-known, and school teachers are the vehicles for this. Numerous time in recent weeks, the President has visited schools and lauded the efforts of teachers who were these days having to work in an environment threatened by terrorism, especially in the southern provinces of the country.
