On November 04, President Karzai received Bernard Bot, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, at the Presidential Palace.
Minister Bot stated his country’s commitment to the people of Afghanistan and the role the Netherlands was playing in the reconstruction of Uruzgan province and implementing significant number of projects in the province.
Minister Bot had visited Uruzgan and had met with the people and the Dutch forces that are based there and said, “The people’s spirit and the pace of reconstruction in Uruzgan made me very happy.”
He also emphasized counter-narcotics and the training of Afghanistan’s security institutions:
“Dutch forces will implement irrigation projects as part of the alternative livelihood program in this province to help farmers refrain from poppy cultivation.”
“To further strengthen security in Afghanistan, the Dutch Government will continue to assist in training the national police and army.”
On the topic of corruption within the Afghan Government, Minister Bot said, “After meeting with the Chief Justice and Attorney General, I felt confident that the Government of Afghanistan is committed to the fight against corruption.”
President Karzai thanked Minister Bot for the Netherlands assistance to the people of Afghanistan and said, “The success of Afghanistan depends on the cooperation and efforts of the international community. The training of the national army and police is of crucial importance to Afghanistan and I appreciate your assistance in this regard.”
“Construction of roads for farmers will provide better economic opportunities for the country and will open up remote markets to them. I hope your country will also assist Afghans in this regard.”
The meeting was attended by Dr. Rangeen Dadfar Spanta, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and General Abdul Rahim Wardak, Minister of Defense.
