President Hamid Karzai meeting members of the Provincial CouncilsOn March 03, President Hamid Karzai met with a number of the Provincial Councils’ members at the Gul Khana Palace.

During the meeting, Abdullah Ahmadzai, Head of Logar’s Provincial Council, presented the annual report on the achievements of the Provincial Councils and trips undertaken by councils’ members and seminars held.

Mr. Ahmadzai said, “Members of the Provincial Councils have made notable achievements in the fight against narcotics and corruption, strengthening security, reform of local administrations, and implementing development plans in their respective provinces.”

“Security and transport problems and lack of offices for the councils’ members are major problems.”

Mr. Ahmadzai requested an increase in the budget for the Provincial Councils and stressed the need for their affairs to be handled through the Office of Administrative Affairs.

The President appreciated their achievements and asked them for their views about two important national issues: The Afghan parliament’s proposal for national reconciliation and the participation of members of the Regional Peace Jirgas.

The President said, “Before signing of the national reconciliation charter, I will consult with you, tribal elders and Jihadi leaders.”

“After the release of the report by Human Rights Watch, I rejected the report both by issuing a press release and during the cabinet meeting. Afghanistan is facing many challenges posed by selfishness and getting revenge. It is only possible to achieve progress when we forgive others.”

“The victims of conflicts can take the perpetrators of crimes to court. No-one, even the President, can not deprive the people of their rights to justice. It is the court which can bring criminals to justice in the light of evidences.”

Speaking about regional peace Jirga, the President said, “The Government of Pakistan has sent a letter to the office of the regional peace Jirga with a view to speed up the process. I will discuss with you and other elders in further detail the number of participants of this Jirga.”

“Heads of the Provincial Councils, some members of the provincial councils and Jihadi leaders will be members of this Jirga.”

Some members of the Provincial Councils also talked and confirmed the President’s remarks. They expressed their respect for victims’ rights and emphasized the need for strengthening security and implementing the law.
