President Hamid Karzai met on Tuesday in the Palace in Kabul with Italian Defense Minister, Ignazio La Russa.

Minister La Russa assured the President of his country’s continued assistance to the people of Afghanistan and urged that “Italy will continue to support the reconstruction of Afghanistan and will remain engaged in helping the country until it can get back on its own feet.”

President Karzai thanked people and the government of Italy for their contribution in different areas in the rebuilding of Afghanistan.

Italy is among the major donors to the reconstruction process in Afghanistan with its bulk of assistance focused for a strong judicial system.

Italy pledged in Paris Conference an amount of 234 million Dollars for the development in Afghanistan.

There are currently about 2,350 Italian troops under NATO stationed mostly in the western province of Herat.
